British satellite television provider, Sky, has revealed plans to make its ‘Sky Player’ online TV software available as a separate subscription service.

Sky Player was initially designed as a ‘catch up’ service, allowing Sky subscribers to watch content after it has aired. As online video quality improves, however, executives with the company believe that the Player has the potential to be a valuable service in its own right.

“Until now, Sky Player has been a ‘bonus’ for existing Sky customers,” explained Sky’s Chief Operating Officer, Mike Darcey. “This will continue but in its new guise there will also be access on PC for a dedicated subscription service.”

The new manifestation of Sky Player will be launched “in the next few months,” according to Darcey. Subscribers will be able to view Sky Sports programming using the service, and a deal is currently being negotiated with content providers to make Sky1 and a number of film channels available as well.
