U.S. retail giant, Wal-Mart, began selling Apple’s popular iPhone device yesterday, following Best Buy to become Apple’s second mass-market retail distributor.

The 8-gigabyte iPhone 3G will sell for $197 ($2 below the normal retail price), while the 16-gigabyte version will cost $297 (also $2 less than usual). This pricing scheme is a bit of a letdown for industry observers, some of whom had been predicting a deeply-discounted $99 iPhone in time for Christmas.

Those who purchase the iPhone from Wal-Mart are required to sign a two-year service agreement with Apple’s wireless partner, AT&T.
