Carleton Student Develops Battery-Saving Technology for Mobile Devices

A PhD student at Ottawa’s Carleton University has developed a technology that could reduce the power consumption of mobile devices by up to 12x, significantly increasing battery life.

The technology allows electrical circuits within a device to bypass internal wiring and communicate with the phone’s antenna directly, via a wireless module.

“This has not been tried before — that the circuits are connected to the antenna wirelessly. They’ve been connected through wires and a bunch of other components. That’s where the power gets lost,” commented Atif Shamim, the engineering student who developed the technology.

It is quite possible that such an invention could be used in future multimedia smartphones, such as the Apple iPhone, which frequently has frequently drawn criticism for its relatively low battery life.
