MySpace Brings Streaming Video to Mobile Phones
6:00 am on December 3, 2008 | Category: Web Services, Cell Phones, Multimedia
Starting today, wireless customers who access the MySpace social networking service on their mobile phones will be able to watch online video clips over the airwaves.
The new feature will allow for the “streaming” of MySpace video content onto any of a number of mobile devices including the BlackBerry Bold, LG Voyager, Motorola Q9, Nokia N95, Palm Centro, or Samsung Instinct. In future, the company will also enable mobile video downloads, effectively extending the service to the Apple iPhone and other devices.
Video that is available to mobile phone users includes user-generated MySpace videos, as well as professionally produced content from the National Hockey League, National Geographic magazine, The Onion (a satirical newspaper), and TMZ (a celebrity news and gossip website).
The free mobile video service will be supported by advertising, and is part of an effort by MySpace and other internet-based companies to take advantage of the small but promising mobile advertising market.
MySpace did not offer any details on how much the mobile video service cost to create, or whether it is expected to turn a profit in the near future.
