British satellite television provider, Sky, demonstrated a new three-dimensional TV service in London yesterday, claiming passage of a new milestone in home television delivery.

“Lots of people have seen a 3D film – we want to bring that experience into the living room,” said Sky’s director of strategic product development, Gerry O’Sullivan. “Everyone who has seen the 3D service has been blown away by it.”

The 3D television service will be available within the next year, O’Sullivan said, noting that it would be available through existing HD infrastructure, without the need to purchase a new set-top box (although 3D glasses are required).

3D TV is expected to be a major development in home entertainment in 2009, and will likely feature prominently at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month.
