British cable giant, Virgin Media, is planning to launch the country’s fastest broadband internet offering. At an impressive 50-Megabytes per second (Mbps), the service will be more than twice as speedy as its nearest competitor and nine times faster than the average UK broadband connection.

Once Virgin’s new package is launched, its highest-tier customers will be able to download an entire music album in as little as 11 seconds, a TV show in one minute, and a movie in three-and-a-half minutes.

Virgin plans to launch the 50-Mbps service throughout the UK during 2009, beginning with the borough of Warrington in Cheshire, England.

Currently, the UK’s fastest high-speed internet service is Be Broadband’s 24-Mbps connection. Virgin’s own top speed currently stands at 20-Mbps.
