South Korean handset maker, LG Electronics, hopes to stay at the cutting edge of the mobile camera market, announcing plans for a new 12-megapixel camera phone to be launched later this year.

The forthcoming device will likely compete with the Sony Ericsson Idou, which was unveiled at the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Tech-savvy consumers are responding to these ultra-high resolution products with ambivalent skepticism, however, noting that a greater resolution doesn’t add much to image quality beyond a certain point. Having a good lens and image sensor, they content, is far more important.
