Waterloo, Ontario-based smartphone manufacturer, Research In Motion, has reported earnings of $477.3 million ($0.83/share) for its fiscal third quarter, up from $370.5 million in the same period a year earlier.
RIM shipped a total of 6.7 million units and added 2.6 million new wireless email subscribers, largely due to the high-profile launch of the BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Storm devices. These multimedia-enabled smartphones allowed the company to continue making inroads into the consumer market, with non-enterprise customers now accounting for 60% of subscriber additions.
“RIM launched an unprecedented number of BlackBerry smartphones in the third quarter, and these new products are being adopted at an even faster pace than we expected,” commented RIM co-CEO, Jim Balsillie. “Our industry-leading product portfolio is positioned well to capitalize on the increasing market opportunity in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009 and beyond.”
RIM now has a total of 21 million BlackBerry subscribers, 45% of which are non-enterprise users.
