Korean handset maker, Samsung Electronics, is hoping to cultivate an eco-friendly public image with a newly-announced solar-powered smartphone called Blue Earth.

Made from recycled plastic, the device resembles the shape of a shiny pebble, and can be fully charged (to deliver four hours of talk time) with 10 to 14 hours of solar energy.

“This phone demonstrates our small but meaningful commitments for the future and our environment,” said Samsung executive vice president, JK Shin.

The Blue Earth features a 3.7-inch touchscreen display and built-in 720p high-definition video camcorder. It is clearly positioned to compete in the same market as Apple’s iPhone device, according to CCS Insight analyst, Ben Wood.
