Skype, the popular web-based VoIP application, is now available to Apple iPhone and iPod Touch users in numerous countries, after its appearance in Apple’s online ‘App Store’ early this morning.

The new mobile application allows for free ‘Skype-to-Skype’ calls and low-cost calling to landlines and mobile phones, from within any Wi-Fi hotspot. Users can also see which of their friends are online, and send and receive Skype instant messages over Wi-Fi or a cellular network.

“Skype software for the iPhone has been the number one request among our users,” said Skype’s Chief Operating Officer, Scott Durchslag. “We are delighted to deliver on this request and put Skype into the pockets of millions of people around the world who are carrying iPhone and iPod Touch devices.”

Those millions of people do not include Canadian customers, however, apparently due to patent licensing issues. Neither Skype nor Apple would comment on the exact nature of those issues, or whether they could be resolved.
