HP Lays Groundwork for Google Android-Based Netbooks

Computer hardware giant, Hewlett-Packard, has begun testing Google’s Android operating system for use in one or more forthcoming netbook devices, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal yesterday.
HP has since acknowledged that it is “studying†the Google OS, but won’t say if the company has a particular product in mind.
Industry watchers have been predicting for some time that major PC manufacturers would begin offering Android-based notebooks, and netbook chipmaker, Freescale, has already announced plans for an Android chipset.
Android, which was initially designed for smartphones, would be a newer and cheaper alternative to Microsoft Windows XP, which is currently the dominant OS for netbook computers. Microsoft’s more recent operating system, Windows Vista, is too bulky to run on many netbooks.
Analysts with ABI Research expect netbook shipments to reach 35 million this year, then surge to 139 million in 2013.
