Finnish cell phone giant, Nokia, has announced plans to lay off another 450 employees in an effort to cut costs amid declining handset sales.

Nokia shipped 93.2 million phones in the first three months of 2009, down sharply from 113.1 million the the fourth quarter of 2008. In order to cope with this lower demand and other effects of the global economic slowdown, the company has already cut more than 2,000 jobs, and hopes to reduce its annual costs by €700 million (US$910 million) by the end of next year.

Nokia will also strive to make greater use of third-party software designers, providing a beta Software Development Kit for the forthcoming N97 smartphone, and allowing third parties to help develop its Ovi Share photo- and video-sharing service.
