Ontario Legislature Passes Anti-Cell Phone Law
11:53 pm on April 24, 2009 | Category: Mobile Devices, Regulation
Ontario’s provincial Parliament passed a controversial piece of legislation this week, preventing drivers from using cell phones behind the wheel.
The Countering Distracting Driving and Promoting Green Transportation Act passed unanimously on Wednesday, despite the arguably illogical nature of the bill. It bans the use of mobile phones and other electronic devices to talk, email, or sent text messages while driving, but makes an exception for hands-free Bluetooth devices.
The law is expected to take effect sometime this fall, and will involve fines of up to $500.
Ontario is the fourth Canadian province to ban cell phone use behind the wheel, following Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Quebec.

It’s about time. You can’t be looking out the front window of your car, and typing or even looking at the cell phone, blackberry, etc at the same time. In the last two days I have seen people, young people drive right thru a red light, while dialling, or texting on their phones. Whata bunch of idiots to think you can be looking in two different directions at the same time. Book’em Danno.

I think they should take away the offenders license from them on top of getting a fine. Due to the fact that they are to dumb to be driveing in the first place.

When a person is unsafe with any other persons life….get them off the road for a long time.
The law is tooo lienient with a lot of unsafe situations….take the license for a month….let
them walk…..even dumb people learn quicker this way….

I am pleased with the passage of this law. Personally I have almost been run off the road by people talking on their cell phones while driving. The distracted driver who went through a red light recently while talking on his cell phone could have hit me. I support a strong stand on this issue and yet would like to see demerit points attached to this offence.
