Research In Motion to Launch More Touchscreen BlackBerry Smartphones

Less than six months after releasing its first touchscreen smartphone, Research In Motion is planning more such devices.
RIM’s BlackBerry Storm device, which uses SurePress technology to offer an on-screen QWERTY keyboard, has propelled the Waterloo, Ontario-based company to new levels of success, despite some initially negative reviews.
In a recent interview with Laptop Magazine, RIM Chief Executive, Mike Lazaridis, said that product diversity is one of the company’s main strengths.
“I think what the story between all these devices continues to be that there’s no one-size-fits-all BlackBerry and that offering choice is good,” Lazaridis said. “If you just put everything in one device it becomes big or expensive or complicated. And so you really need to optimize what you’ve identified as the segments you’d really want to go after, whether it’s the Bold, the Storm, the Pearl or Curve.”
Lazaridis referred to the Storm as Research In Motion’s “first touch product,” and expressed optimism about the company’s future, despite the global economic slowdown.
“When the economy is challenged, people flee to trusted brands,” he said, noting that “BlackBerry is certainly a trustworthy brand. That’s the key in this market.”
