The global wireless networking market has expanded significantly over the last few years due primarily to the exploding popularity of Wi-Fi among both consumers and enterprise users.

This trend was recently explored by ABI Research, which expects networking companies to ship more than 70 million Wi-Fi access points next year.

Consumers and small businesses, which account for the vast majority of Wi-Fi equipment shipments, are primarily still using 802.11g Wi-Fi technology. Larger businesses, however, are already beginning to switch to the faster 802.11n standard, resulting in a spike in sales.

“Much of the growth seen in 2008, particularly on the enterprise side, is attributed to the explosive uptake of 802.11n products,” commented ABI industry analyst, Serene Fong. As this trend seeps into the consumer sector, 802.11n is expected to overtake shipments of 802.11g, achieving a 60% market share by 2012.
