Microsoft has finished developing its next mobile operating system, Windows Mobile 6.5, according to a Twitter message sent out by the company’s software development team yesterday.

For the record, Windows Mobile 6.5 is DONE…complete…looks really good IOHO and every bit functional,” the message reads.

The new version of Windows Mobile will include a number of cosmetic upgrades, including larger on-screen buttons for improved ease of use. The OS will also be more consumer focused, with shortcuts to music and photo applications on the Today Screen.

But just because Windows Mobile 6.5 is complete doesn’t mean it will hit the market immediately. Microsoft will distribute the new OS to a number of licensed hardware manufacturers, who will then customize it to fit various mobile devices.

The first Windows Mobile 6.5-based products are expected to hit the market sometime this fall.
