Strong demand for Apple’s new and improved smartphone, the iPhone 3GS, is putting pressure on availability of the device.

For the first time since last summer, Apple has placed an iPhone availability tool on its website, allowing U.S. customers to check if the 3GS can be found at an Apple retail store in their area. Availability data is updated hourly, via a direct link to the company’s point-of-sale computers.

As of Sunday night, the iPhone 3GS is sold out entirely in a number of states, including Alabama, Delaware, Kentucky, Oregon, and Utah, and supplies are patchy in many other parts of the country.

For Americans looking to buy a new iPhone, it might be wise to check supplies ahead of time before heading to the store.
