Personal computer manufacturer, Dell, is developing a handheld internet device based on Google’s Android operating system, according to today’s Wall Street Journal, citing two sources who had seen early prototypes of the device.

The forthcoming Dell product will look similar to the Apple iPhone, but slightly larger, and won’t include cellular phone capability. Categorized as a ‘mobile internet device’ (MID), the new product will include many features of a netbook PC, and is expected to compete with Apple’s iPod Touch.

Dell’s new device may be available by the end of this year, according to the Wall Street Journal’s sources. The company itself would not comment on availability, or even confirm the product’s existence.
