Google is hoping to attract smartphone users to its mobile mapping service, by adding voice-based search capabilities to Android’s Google Maps software.

The voice technology is similar to that of Google’s existing mobile search application, and is apparently capable of understanding English words in American, British, and Australian accents.

“Whether you’re searching for an address, a business, or nearby windsurfing sports, just speak your query and Google Maps will find it,” Google announced on its mobile blog. “After your search, you’ll see a map of places. To help you decide where to go, we’ve improved our business listings to include content such as store hours, prices, ratings, and reviews.”
