Korean handset giant, Samsung Electronics, has announced plans to launch the world’s first 12-megapixel camera phone later this month, upstaging Sony Ericsson’s plans for a similar product this fall.

Samsung’s Pixon12 device will feature a Xenon flash, touchscreen auto-focusing, and the ability to record videos at 30 frames-per-second. Images are stored on a 16GB microSD card, and can be uploaded to social networking sites such as Facebook, Picasa, and Flickr, via Wi-Fi or 3G networks.

Sony Ericsson had expected its forthcoming Satio handset (set to launch early in the fourth quarter) to be the world’s first 12-megapixel camera phone, and will likely be frustrated by the Pixon12′s first-to-market advantage, according to a CCS Insight research note. The company has aggressively targeted the camera phone market in recent years, and launched the world’s first 8-megapixel handset, the Sony Ericsson C905, in late 2008.
