Laptops and consumer electronics devices continued to account for the majority of Wi-Fi chipset shipments last year, but mobile handsets are driving growth in the Wi-Fi market, according to a recent report by In-Stat.

The number of Wi-Fi chips installed in smartphones and other handsets jumped by 51% in 2008, and is expected to account for more than 20% of the Wi-Fi chipset market in 2010. The popularity of Apple’s iPhone device, as well as numerous Wi-Fi-enabled handsets from Nokia and HTC, is currently fueling this trend.

In the years to come, In-Stat expects the new 802.11n Wi-Fi specification to form a growing percentage of chipset revenues, surpassing the dominant 802.11g technology in stationary consumer electronics devices sometime next year.
