Japanese electronics giant, Sony, is planning a new product that would combine the functions of its PlayStation Portable device with those of Sony Ericsson mobile phones.

The company will set up a product development team as early as next week, according to a report in Japan’s Nikkei business daily. The likely result of this effort would be “a cellphone-game gear hybrid,” designed to compete with the Apple iPhone.

Sony has produced the Walkman brand of music players for more than 30 years, and manufactures a wide range of mobile phones through a joint venture with Stockholm, Sweden-based Ericsson. The company has lost significant market share to Apple’s iPod and iPhone devices in recent years, however, and is looking for new ways to compete with the American hardware giant.
