Telus and Bell May Challenge Rogers in Canadian iPhone Market

Canada’s leading telecom carriers, Bell and Telus, may begin offering Apple’s popular iPhone 3GS device later this year, according to a recent Toronto Star article, citing anonymous sources.
Telus and Bell are currently working on a C$1 billion joint upgrade of their wireless networks, which will allow them to begin supporting a range of GSM-based handsets, including the iPhone. Sources suggest that the upgrade process is several months ahead of schedule, and will be complete sometime this fall.
Rogers Wireless is currently the only iPhone carrier in Canada, and has seen stronger subscriber additions and profits as a result. When Bell and Telus finally do launch the iPhone (more than a year after their leading rival), they will be forced to play catch-up in terms of smartphone market share.
