Northern Ireland Boasts Fastest Broadband Speeds in UK
5:32 pm on July 28, 2009 | Category: Telecom Services, Internet
Broadband users in Northern Ireland enjoy the fastest download speeds in the United Kingdom, according to a new Ofcom study.
The average North Ireland broadband user has 4.1-Mbps of downstream bandwidth, compared to 3.9-Mbps for the UK as a whole. But Britain’s telecom regulator also found that a lower percentage of North Ireland households have access to cable internet or local loop unbundled services, meaning that there is less broadband competition in the region.
“It is very encouraging that some people here are enjoying the fastest broadband speeds in the UK, but we know that there are still parts of Northern Ireland, particularly rural areas, where speeds are much slower,” commented Ofcom’s North Ireland director, Denis Wolinski. “Ofcom will continue to encourage the roll out of better, faster broadband services across the whole of Northern Ireland.”
