Research In Motion Acquires Mobile Browser Developer
4:35 pm on August 24, 2009 | Category: Business, Mobile Devices, Software
BlackBerry users may soon have access to a new mobile web browser, thanks to Research In Motion’s acquisition of Torch Mobile, a Toronto-based software developer.
Torch is the creator of an open-source web browser called Iris, which has received favourable reviews for offering tabbed browsing on touchscreen devices. The Torch team of developers will begin working with RIM to “contribute to the ongoing enhancement of the BlackBerry platform,” according to a statement released by the company earlier today.
By acquiring Torch, RIM is hoping to improve the BlackBerry’s web surfing capabilities in the face of tough competition from other devices like the Palm Pre and Apple iPhone 3GS.
