BlackBerry smartphone manufacturer, Research In Motion, is providing funding to the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary to help promote research into wireless location technologies, such as GPS.

The project will provide $1.3 million in funding over a period of three years, and is a collaboration between Research In Motion, Alberta Advanced Education and Technology, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Researchers will seek to enhance the performance of location technologies in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, and explore the use of such technologies in mobile devices.
