In a long-awaited move, AT&T has announced plans to offer multimedia messaging service (MMS) for the Apple iPhone device.

A software update enabling MMS will be available to iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users beginning on September 25.

AT&T cited an exponential increase in wireless traffic as the reason for the long delay in launching MMS.

“The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone’s multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One,” the company explains on its website.
