Google’s web-based email service, GMail, suffered a widespread outage this afternoon with users in North America, Europe, and Asia reporting a complete lack of access.

Google acknowledged at 12:53pm PDT that a service outage was affecting “a majority” of GMail users. The company’s engineers provided updates throughout the early afternoon and announced at 2:37pm that the problem had been resolved.

Google is “still investigating the root cause of this outage,” according to a posting on the GMail blog.
