Apple has surprised tech industry experts by approving the music streaming application, Spotify, for distribution through its iTunes App Store.

Spotify allows users to stream music from a library of 6-million songs, via a peer-to-peer file sharing network. The mobile version is being offered at a cost of $16 per month (£9.99 in the UK), and enables subscribers to save 3,000 songs to their mobile devices for offline listening.

In short, Spotify Mobile is in direct competition with Apple’s own iTunes service, which is the default music service on the iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

Apple’s decision to offer Sporify through the App Store has caused some industry observers to wonder if the company is relaxing its standards for new applications, in light of its high-profile rejection of Google Voice and the resulting bad press and regulatory headaches.
