Telus Raises Price of Pay Phones in Alberta
7:01 pm on September 24, 2009 | Category: Telecom Services, Telephone
Alberta’s leading telephone provider, Telus, has raised the cost of local pay phone calls from 35 to 50 cents, citing the need to maintain revenue amid declining demand.
Telus spokesman, Chris Gerritsen, said that the move is necessary for the company to continue providing public phone service when the majority of consumers use cell phones.
“The use of pay phones continues to fall while our costs to maintain those pay phones remains largely constant,” Gerritsen explained.
There are currently some 20,000 pay phones in Alberta and British Columbia, down from 38,000 in 1999.
