Canadian cell phone carriers lag behind their American counterparts in terms of environmental sustainability, according to the new “North American Green Carrier” study carried out by ABI Research.

Analysts found AT&T to be the greenest carrier in North America, followed by U.S. rivals, Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless. Telus Mobility was ranked the greenest Canadian carrier, coming in fifth place overall, while Rogers Wireless and Bell Mobility placed 6th and 7th, respectively.

The rankings were based on a combination of network energy consumption, the availability of green cell phones and network equipment, and the effectiveness of each carrier’s cell phone recycling program.
