Two New Area Codes Coming to Ontario and Quebec

The Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec will each get a new area code next year as telecommunications carriers struggle to meet growing demand for new phone numbers.
Beginning on May 17, 2010, new customers in eastern Ontario’s ’613′ area code territory (which includes Ottawa and Kingston) may be assigned a number beginning in 343. In August, an additional area code (579) will also be introduced for the ’450′ region surrounding Montreal, Quebec.
“The introduction of a new area code in a region enables millions of additional telephone numbers to be provided without affecting the existing numbers,” commented Glenn Pilley, Director of the Canadian Numbering Administration.
Demand for new phone numbers (and by extension, area codes) has been fueled by the growing popularity of wireless and VoIP services in recent years.
