Vancouver-based cell phone giant, Telus Mobility, announced today that it would stop charging a $6.95/month “system access fee,” in an effort to simplify its pricing structure.

This means that the advertised cost of Telus’ plans will be more representative of the actual rate that is billed each month.

“Nobody likes surprises,” said the company’s president, Darren Entwistle, in a statement. “We are listening to Canadians, who have told us wireless pricing can be confusing.”

The change will take effect on November 5, at which time existing Telus users will have the option to renew their contracts on one of the company’s new “Clear Choice” rate plans. The cost of a basic plan will increase by $5 at that time, but the new price will include voicemail, unlike the current basic option.

    1. What a load of garbage. Headline is Telus is dropping $6.95 system access fee, but wait! It is also to give existing contract holders (who know this super duper deal is happening) an option to sign on for a new “Contract”..yeah…oh… and the basic rate is going up by $5.00 folks. Can you believe this crap!!! Why not tell the truth!!!, Hey folks we want to lock you in to a new long term contract to save you from running before the new cheap unlimited minute providers hit town just before Christmas, and we will discount our rates a whopping $1.95 (which is really all it amounts to) then Telus will get you all tied up for another 3 years with a new phone to ice the cake pkg for you. THEY MUST THINK WE ARE ALL STUPID!!! WAIT A FEW MONTHS IF YOU WANT TO SAVE A LOT OF MONEY ON YOUR MOBILE PHONE!!!! DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR!!!

    2. What were they doing with the $6.95 they were charging. I only go with providers that don’t charge the extra fees like Virgin Mobile.
