Vonage Launches International VoIP Application for iPhone and BlackBerry
2:42 pm on October 5, 2009 | Category: VoIP, Cell Phones, Software
Vonage’s mobile VoIP application is now available for iPhone and BlackBerry users, offering low-cost international cell phone calls.
The free software connects to Vonage using Wi-Fi or by placing a local wireless call, then routes the international call over the company’s VoIP network. The service costs just pennies a minute to communicate around the world, significantly less than the international rates of most cell phone providers.
“With Vonage Mobile you can call around the world from home, a Wi-Fi hotspot, or while traveling around the country,” explained Vonage CEO, Marc Lefar. “There are no access numbers or new phone numbers to give to friends and family. Simply enter an international number or select a contact from the existing contacts on your iPhone or Blackberry and hit send.”
Vonage is hoping that its newfound smartphone presence will help facilitate a comeback in the VoIP industry. The company has been under intense competitive pressure in recent years, and its stock was in danger of being delisted from the NYSE last year after falling to less than $1 per share.
Vonage shares rose $0.17, or 12.88% today, to close at $1.49.
