British Columbia Joins Canadian Cell Phone Recycling Program
1:11 am on November 12, 2009 | Category: Mobile Devices, Cell Phones
The province of British Columbia has joined Canada’s national cell phone recycling program, bringing together a number of existing programs under the ‘Recycle My Cell’ brand.
Recycle My Cell is a free recycling program organized by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA), in partnership with handset makers, carriers, and recycling companies. For each mobile device that is returned for recycling, a donation is given to a participating charity, such as Food Banks Canada, Tree Canada, or the World Wildlife Fund.
“If we can keep electronic goods out of landfills and have them properly re-processed,we can divert waste from landfills, free up space, and protect our water tables and ground water from potential leaching,” commented BC Environment Minister, Barry Penner.
British Columbians can now visit RecycleMyCell.ca or call 1-888-797-1740 to obtain a list of the ten closest cell phone recycling drop-off locations. There are a total of 552 drop-off sites throughout the province, mostly at retail outlets where mobile devices are sold.
