Rogers Communications to Lay Off 900 Employees
3:06 pm on November 26, 2009 | Category: Business, Corporate
Cable and wireless giant, Rogers Communications, announced today that it is laying off 900 employees in an effort to streamline operations and reduce inefficiency.
Rogers’ vice president of corporate communications, Terrie Tweddle, noted in an interview with CBC News that the jobs being eliminated “represent a very small percentage of our workforce,” and are primarily at the management and executive levels.
Technology analyst, Carmi Levy, said he was “not at all” surprised by the layoffs, and expects Rogers’ major competitors to follow suit.
“The landscape in Canada is evolving rapidly, more rapidly than it’s ever done before, and the incumbent players are under pressure to squeeze out efficiencies,” Levy explained. “We knew the day of reckoning was coming. Today it was Rogers, in the future it could also be Telus and Bell.”
Rogers currently employs some 30,000 people across Canada.
