Google Inc. will soon launch its own much-anticipated Android-based smartphone, the Nexus One, at a cost of US$530, according to a report on the gadget website, Gizmodo.

The Nexus One will be Google’s first in-house smartphone and represents a radical expansion of the Mountain View, California-based technology giant’s business model.

The $530 price tag is for an ‘unlocked’ version of the phone, not bound by a carrier contract. It will reportedly be available for just $180 on a two-year T-Mobile service agreement.

Google is expected to formally unveil the Nexus One at a scheduled press conference on January 5.
