Photographic equipment maker, Eastman Kodak Co., has won a the initial phase of an intellectual property dispute before the U.S. International Trade Commission, which could see certain Samsung camera phones banned from the American market.

Kodak alleges that Samsung infringed upon two of its patents related to the capture, compression, and storage of digital images, and to a method of previewing digital video. The preliminary decision in Kodak’s favour is still subject to review by the entire six-member International Trade Commission, but the company says that it is pleased with the victory.

“We are gratified that the judge recognized the validity and infringement of the digital camera patents at issue,” said Kodak spokesman, David Lanzillo, in a statement. “As we’ve said many times before, we have invested hundreds of millions of dollars creating this technology and we have an obligation to our shareholders and other licensees to protect that investment.”

Kodak settled a similar patent dispute with LG Electronics last month. Terms of that settlement were not disclosed.
