BlackBerry manufacturer, Research In Motion, issued an apology earlier today after its mobile email service suffered a widespread outage for the second time in under a week.

“RIM continues to monitor its systems to maintain normal service levels and apologizes for any inconvenience to customers,” the company said, confirming that the outage had delayed the delivery of emails last night and early this morning, but noting that phone calls and text messages were not affected.

The problem was apparently caused by a software glitch in an updated version of the BlackBerry’s email software.

“Based on preliminary analysis, it appears a flaw in two recently released versions of BlackBerry Messenger caused an unanticipated database issue within the BlackBerry infrastructure,” RIM said in a statement. A new version of BlackBerry Messenger (with the flaw corrected) was released early this morning.
