Ottawa-based satellite operator, Telesat, announced today that it has purchased a new broadcasting satellite from Space Systems/Loral, a leading manufacturer of space communications technology.

The Nimiq 6 satellite will be leased to Bell Canada and used to deliver high-definition television signals to Bell TV customers across the country. It is expected to operate for approximately 15 years and will produce “meaningful incremental revenue” for Telesat, according to the company’s CEO, Dan Goldberg.

Telesat is a former Bell Canada subsidiary that was spun off by the telecommunications giant in 2007. Its principal shareholders now include Canada’s Public Sector Pension Investment Board as well as Loral Space & Communications Inc., the parent company of Space Systems/Loral.
