Western Canada’s leading telecommunications provider, Telus Corp., has announced plans to lay off 125 employees from its business solutions division.

Telus blamed a slow economy and competitive telecom industry for the cuts, most of which are at the management level.

“With the recession other businesses are experiencing layoffs, some businesses are shutting down, and there are fewer phone customers,” said a Telus spokesman. “The telecommunications industry is hotly competitive at the moment and is rapidly changing. The challenges are continuing and we’ll continue to adapt to them.”

This comes less than two weeks after cable giant, Rogers Communications, laid off 900 management-level employees, also citing the need to adapt in a highly competitive market.
