Police officers in Ontario and British Columbia will begin handing out fines for “distracted driving” on Monday, ticketing motorists who use a cell phone or other handheld device behind the wheel.

Ontario’s anti-cell phone law came into effect on October 26 and British Columbia’s was implemented on January 1. Up until now, however, both provinces have only issued warning tickets.

Ontario drivers will now be fined $155 for each infraction, while B.C. motorists will have to shell out $167.
