The world’s leading handset manufacturer, Nokia, is making its Ovi Maps mobile navigation software available to Nokia smartphone users at no extra charge.

Ovi Maps comes with detailed maps of more than 180 countries and turn-by-turn voice directions for 74 countries in 46 languages. Traffic information is also available in select markets.

“Before, navigation was always a premium service, which had to be paid for by the end user or the mobile operator,” said Nokia’s vice president of location services, Chrisof Hellmis. “As of today, navigation is free.”

Ovi Maps is now available for download on 10 Nokia smartphones, including the N97 mini, E72, and 5800 ExpressMusic.

Nokia took control of the Ovi Maps brand in 2008 when it completed an $8.1 billion acquisition of Navteq.
