Winnipeg’s Transit system is introducing a new service allowing passengers to access bus schedules on their mobile devices.

The “BUStxt” service sends bus departure times via SMS, in response to a number of simple text-based commands. It also allows passengers to find out when a bus they’re riding will arrive at a specific stop.

BUStxt makes it possible for “buses themselves to keep track of their own schedule,” explained Winnipeg Transit service department manager, Bill Menzies. “If they’re off their schedule, it automatically sends messages back to the system. Now, we want to push that back out to our customers so people can get real-time information.”

BUStxt itself is free to use, although users may be required to pay for text messages, depending on their wireless plan.
