24 leading cell phone carriers from around the world have announced plans for a united front against Apple in the mobile software market.

The group of companies, which includes Vodafone, Orange, AT&T, China Mobile, and Singtel, will collaborate on a digital marketplace for mobile applications, similar to Apple’s popular App Store. The ‘Wholesale Applications Community’ (WAC) will offer versatile applications designed to work on all sufficiently-advanced cell phones, “irrespective of device or technology.”

“This is tremendously exciting news for our industry and will serve to catalyse the development of a range of innovative cross-device, cross-operator applications,” commented Rob Conway, chief executive of the GSM Association, a wireless industry trade group.

WAC will join a crowded playing field of aspiring mobile app stores, which already includes Research In Motion’s BlackBerry App World, Google’s Android Market, and Nokia’s Ovi store. All of these companies are seeking to duplicate Apple’s success and take advantage of the fast-growing mobile software market.
