Canadian wireless start up, Public Mobile, opened its first retail stores today, and announced that its forthcoming mobile phone network will be up and running in May.

Public Mobile has launched 25 stores (15 in Toronto and 10 in Montreal) and is taking pre-orders for its $40/month unlimited talk and text offering. Customers who sign up before the May network launch will receive free long distance service “for life,” the company says.

Public Mobile will start out by offering four basic handsets with no contracts. It does not expect to offer any advanced smartphones in the foreseeable future.
