Ottawa’s Carleton University has launched a pilot project, allowing students, staff, and frequent visitors to the campus to pay for parking via text messaging.

Users can pre-register for the service by visiting iParked.ca and entering a credit card and cell phone number. This allows the university to bill them whenever they send in a text message indicating their desire to park in a particular location. When a user’s allotted time is about to run out, the system sends them a message asking if they wish to authorize another payment.

The new technology, which was developed by a Carleton professor, is being tested in Parking Lot 2 of the campus for the next two months. If deemed a success, it will likely be extended campus wide in the fall.
