Canada’s leading cell phone carrier, Rogers Wireless, is rumoured to be readying a new discount wireless brand, so as to complement its existing Fido business and better compete with new market entrants such as Public Mobile, Mobilicity, and WIND.
Numerous industry blogs and at least one analyst are reporting that Rogers will launch the new service under the brand name: ‘chat.r’. It will offer deeply discounted prepaid voice and data packages, including the option of unlimited talk and text.
“We believe at least one of the wireless incumbents, beginning with Rogers, will be launching a new prepaid unlimited talk and text service in the summer,” wrote Scotia Capital analyst, Jeff Fan, in a note to clients entitled “Getting more cautious on wireless.”
In the note, Fan warns investors that increased competition in Canada’s wireless market could lead to price wars, potentially eroding revenue and profits.
Rogers itself has yet to confirm or deny rumours about the chat.r brand.
