The Globe and Mail, a Toronto-based newspaper with Canada-wide circulation, has released its own news application for Apple iPad devices.

Readers who download the app can expect breaking news and analysis updated in real time, as well as a daily photo gallery and feature content selected specifically for the iPad. Content can be downloaded via Wi-Fi for offline viewing at a later time.

The app is still a work in progress and will be tweaked and improved as market research data is collected, according to the vice president of the Globe and Mail‘s digital division, Angus Frame.

“The iPad is still a very new device,” Frame explained. “Should we be replicating the printed product or the web experience? Is it a unique hybrid? Many of the things we discussed would be unknown until we actually have a product in the market and can watch how people interact with it. It was critical to accept that this first version of the app is an important step but by no means the end product.”

The Globe and Mail is Canada’s leading national newspaper with a weekly print readership of 935,000. It generated 20 million page views last month through online and mobile channels.
