Ontario School District to Keep Wi-Fi, Despite Parental Complaints

An Ontario school district says that there is no evidence that Wi-Fi networks cause negative health effects, and is refusing requests to shut such networks down when students return to classes next month.

A group of parents in the Simcoe Valley School District had complained that their children experienced symptoms such as headaches and nausea at school, which quickly disappeared when they returned home. Only about a dozen parents participated in the complaint, however, despite the fact that Simcoe Valley has around 50,000 students.

“There’s been a lot of information, but there’s nothing definitive that says wireless is causing the issues, so the board affirmed its decision for wireless communications in our schools,” commented Simcoe Valley’s director of education, John Dance. “There’s been nothing to this point along the lines of medical evidence to say that any illnesses or whatever have been caused by wireless communications.”

    2. There is absolutely no harmful effect from Wi-Fi signals and 12 out of 50 000 students is not a valid sample size to make any significant problems with Wi-Fi. Why don’t they look at other sources, such as cell-phone signals first or even the classroom air.

    3. The problem is real but it’s not the Wi-Fi. It’s Subliminal Distraction exposure. Video on CBC News shows computer users sitting in each other’s peripheral vision without Cubicle Level Protection.

      The office cubicle was designed to deal with the vision startle reflex to prevent it by 1968. Designers see only one type of exposure and believe it is a harmless nuisance. It usually happens to one person an an incorrectly designed office situation. An outbreak is very unusual.

      If they turn off the Wi-Fi it might get worse. If students move computers to plug into a LAN more might create exposure.

      A student that creates the same problem at home might have enough exposure to have the full mental break it is known to cause.
